Safe Environment

Volunteers who are new to ministry at St. Mark will need to watch the latest training video, complete a new application, and sign the latest code of conduct and social media forms. New applicants will also need to turn in three reference forms. Volunteers who completed Safe Environment training prior to 2014 and have not left ministry at St. Mark or have not been archived only need to sign the declaration and background information page and watch the video.

In 2002, at their Annual Meeting, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops drafted a landmark document, entitled the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, in response to the crisis of sexual abuse of children in the Church. This document, setting forth their agreed upon responsibilities in combating the problem, was entitled the.  In the Charter all dioceses are required to implement Safe Environment programs within each parish.  Visit the USCCB Charter page to read the Charter and learn more about the Child and Youth Protection services of the USCCB.

In compliance with the Charter, the Archdiocese of OKC requires anyone in the parish who has regular contact with youth (under the age of 18) to undergo Safe Environment Training before being allowed to help with our young people. This program is to help prevent any incidents of abuse in our parish and at any of our parish events. It will also allow us all to be aware of characteristics of abuse in children and predators so we may hopefully prevent further abuse in our community.

At St. Mark, we require anyone who participates in any of our ministries to complete the Safe Environment Training beforeparticipating in the ministry.  This includes (but is not limited to) all RE catechists, Youth helpers, chaperones, SVdP members, Choir members, Lay Ministers, Visitations committee, MDO workers, and Nursery workers.

To be in full compliance with the Archdiocesan Safe Environment Office, each St. Mark employee/volunteer must complete the following and have the information on file at St. Mark. The necessary forms are available on the Archdiocesan Safe Environment page under Documents.

  • Attend a Safe Environment Training seminar
  • Complete the Archdiocesan Employee/Volunteer Application
  • Submitting your application triggers a local and nationwide background check
  • Sign a statement of receipt and agreement to abide by the Archdiocesan Code of Conduct

If you have completed the Safe Environment protocol at another parish, please contact that parish to have your information shared with St. Mark. Otherwise, you will be required to complete the training here at St. Mark.
